Google Romance Beta – April 1, 2006

“With Google Romance, you can:

  • Upload your profile tell the world who you are, or, more to the point, who you’d like to think you are, or, even more to the point, who you want others to think you are.
  • Search for love in all (or at least a statistically significant majority of) the right places with Soulmate Search, our eerily effective psychographic matchmaking software.
  • Endure, via our Contextual Dating option, thematically appropriate multimedia advertising throughout the entirety of your free date.”

China Buys Google – April 1, 2006

“Mu Shu Porked [writes] The People’s Republic of China has acquired a controlling stake in the United States’ fastest growing technology company, Google. Google announced the transfer of 140m shares of Class B stock to a new entity owned by the Chinese Ministry of Information in typically forthright style. The news was disclosed in a Captcha graphic on its Google Canteen Menu weblog; investors had to click a hidden link to see the announcement, and then decode a stenographically-hidden message watermarked into the JPG file. Once decrypted, the message read:

gee it’s raining here in mountain view and my cat’s hungry so we thought we’d better update you on our corporate finances. we’ve sold out to china. have a great weekend boo-yah!! lol

No other details were forthcoming.” Read the entire April Fool’s Day joke article here.

Google to Advertise on the Moon – April 1, 2006

“In the most wide-scale advertising attempt ever known, Google, plans to brand its logo into the surface of the moon so that it is visible from Earth. The search giant will pay the US government an estimated $1bn for the rights to the lunar land. “You’ve heard of Google Mars and Google Earth, where we show you maps of those planets? Well this is Google Moon, where we become the world’s biggest brand,” said an unnamed source at the company.” Read the rest of this April Fool’s Day joke article here.

Torvalds and OSDL Launch New Image Initiative – April 1, 2006

Faced with former Massachusetts CIO Peter Quinn’s harsh appraisal of the real reason behind the “inertia” of Linux in the business world, Linus Torvalds and OSDL have come up with an action plan for rebranding the Linux image and the image of its core developers. They have jointly agreed on the formation of OSDSU, the world’s first Open Source Dress for Success University. Torvalds himself will teach a course on “Introductory sandal wearing,” placing particular emphasis on sock selection. “Color is so important,” Torvalds notes. “You want both socks to share the same color base, and yet it needs to stand out from the pale flesh of a kernel hacker and show off the sandals to their best advantage.” Read the rest of this April Fool’s Day joke article here.

All Your Web 2.0 Are Belong To Us (Source: Yahoo!)- April 1, 2006

“We’re in the midst of buying Dogg (a Web 2.0 cross between Digg and Dogster (“Where Every Dog Has A Webpage”), and you know what? It’s a lot of work. Buying up Web 2.0 companies here and there in piecemeal fashion gets old after a while.

It’s a lot of work on our Corporate Development team, the Public Relations team, and really isn’t that efficient. Plus, it just encourages VCs to pitch us the next “great” company in their portfolio, thereby creating even more work. Man, the acquisition treadmill is tiring… And expensive! So after some long discussions with Tim O’Reilly, Michael Arrington, and other Web 2.0 experts, we’ve decided to just buy Web 2.0. All of it. All the people, the round cornered boxes, crazy business ideas, and pastel colors.” Read the rest of this April Fool’s Day joke articlehere.
