BBC, Google Hook Up on YouTube - March 3, 2007

BEIJING, March 3 (Xinhuanet) — A deal between the BBC and Google to provide news clips and other programs on YouTube was announced Friday by the British news agency. The BBC is going after YouTube’s monthly audience of more than 70 million viewers and hopes to generate wider interest in its programs, its own website and eventually related content on its proposed BBC iPlayer commercial download service. Read the entire article here.

Mobile Content Usage is Higher in Developing Countries – March 2, 2007

Mobile users in third world countries express a stronger desire for content and advanced features, according to a "Global Mobile Mindset Audit" study released by the Forum to Advance the Mobile Experience (FAME), part of the CMO Council and Global Market Insight (GMI), and sponsored by Palm.

U.S. users lag most behind other countries in terms of accessing the Web, or wanting access, using cellular phones. In the U.S., 22.6 percent find the feature important or very important. Other countries exhibit higher demand: Western Europe (30.4 percent); Eastern Europe (53.9 percent); Asia (56.4 percent); and Latin America (63.5 percent). Read the entire article here.

Google Shares More Click Fraud Data – March 1, 2007

Invalid clicks on Google AdWords ads have consistently remained under the 10-percent mark, and are generally in low single-digits, Google revealed today. In addition, the amount of invalid clicks that are not proactively detected and are caught by advertisers is less than 0.02 percent, according to Google’s Shuman Ghosemajumder.

This revelation is the latest in a series of moves designed to offer more transparency to advertisers, said Ghosemajumder, Google’s business product manager for trust & safety. Google has come under fire from lawsuits, click fraud reporting firms, and advertisers in recent months, all looking for more granular details on the level of invalid clicks occurring in the AdWords system. Microsoft Patent Hints at Paid Search Affecting Organic Results – March 1, 2007

The ranking of a website within organic search results could be adversely affected by the paid search strategy involving that site, reports Search Engine Land (via MarketingVox).

The report comes as the result of a patent filing from Microsoft. The algorithm laid out in the patent would filter search results to remove duplicate listing, such as when two URLs point to the same webpage. But it also could remove a site from within organic search results when that website is also part of a paid search listing that appears on the same page or results. Read the entire article here.

Quigo Challenging Google, Yahoo in Contextual Ad Space – February 27, 2007

An upstart in the contextual ad sector, Quigo is beginning to land some major clients and is stealing others from giants Google and Yahoo. Quigo is an increasingly popular alternative for contextual advertisers, because the company offers more control over offerings than rivals Google and Yahoo, the New York Times reports. Quigo gives advertisers the ability to purchase ads on specific sites as well as select pages on those sites. This approach is a welcome contrast for many advertisers as Google and Yahoo want to sell similar ads only on networks of sites. Read the entire article here.
