The Google Parasites – June 29, 2007

“I have to confess a certain fondness for Google, an admiration that has grown out of frequent innovation and creativity. And its frequent luck in the form of success. Then again, my livelihood doesn’t overwhelmingly depend on the whims of Google, so the idiosyncrasies of its search and other services is professionally interesting and not much more. But to a growing legion of small and midsize e-commerce players today, Google’s evolving rules and exact methodologies can devastate—or make wildly successful—and these are matters where those small players have virtually no say.” Read the entire article here.

“Like Reverend Sun Myung Moon presiding over a mass wedding, Marchex has finally married its vast collection of generic, vertical and regional domains with business listings and reviews from Open List, the local search firm it acquired over a year ago. With the move, in the works for a year, the company has removed the ad links that blanketed 100,000 or so of its 200,000 direct navigation domains and replaced them with local business listings, reviews, and search functions intended to raise relevance and consumer loyalty on the sites. Visitors to Web properties such as, and, as well as Zip code domains covering 96 percent of postal areas in the U.S., will now encounter local search interfaces structured around business categories related to the domain in question.” Read the entire article here.

A New Way to Pay – Google Expands Pay-Per-Action for Google AdWords™

Google announced today the worldwide expansion of its pay-per-action advertising beta. We’re interested in knowing what you think about what’s going on in the SEM world and our take on it.
