Fall 2007 Issue of Search Marketing Standard Magazine Goes To Printer

The Fall 2007 issue of Search Marketing Standard magazine is headed to the printer and it’s the biggest issue to date. I may be biased, but I think its coverage of five international search markets is great, particularly since the articles are contributed by authors either living in those countries or closely involved in online marketing in them. If you haven’t subscribed yet, it’s never too late to sign up for your very own copy.

Recent Pay-Per-Click News and Announcements

YouTube Japan Second After U.S. – August 3, 2007

YouTube has announced a series of partnerships in Japan – but the country’s copyright advocates fear producers could still lose out. Google VP David Eun told a Tokyo news conference the site had forged partnerships with six Japanese companies including satellite broadcaster Sky PerfecTV and rising social network Mixi, who will both link to the site. Casio also unveiled a digital camera that uploads to YouTube.

Local Search Growing Faster Than General Search – August 2, 2007

The use of localized search services such as Internet Yellow Pages is outpacing generalized Web search when people are looking for location-specific products, services and information, says a new study. The study, performed by comScore Networks and commissioned by TMP Directional Marketing, found that local search grew 24 percent this year, while general search on Google, Yahoo, MSN and other sites grew at 14 percent. The study also found that 82 percent of the people using local Web search sites follow up their research with offline action, including in-store visits, phone calls, e-mails or purchases. TMPDM said the finding shows advertisers cannot ignore the importance of integrating their online and offline marketing and advertising efforts. Read the entire article here.

eBay Experimenting with Ads on Voice Alert Calls – August 1, 2007

Newly launched mobile company UnWired Nation, with its partner Apptera, is enabling eBay and others to not only contact customers with phone calls using a voice interaction system, but to play them ads as well. UnWired Nation has been quietly developing its Voice Publishing Platform to allow clients, including eBay, to automate the delivery of phone calls to customers and allow them to interact with a voice-based system. The auction site quietly began using the system in June of 2006 to call bidders who opt-in for alerts when auctions they are monitoring are about to end, and then allow them to make one last bid over the phone. "Auctions are a strong component for our business, and there’s a lot of activity in the last three minutes for our auctions," said Henri Moissinac, head of eBay Mobile. "Our primary objective is to get as much activity as possible on eBay, and that includes when people are away from their computer." Read the entire article here.

Yahoo and comScore Study Finds Online Consumers Who Pre-Shop on the Web Spend More In-Store – July 30, 2007

Sunnyvale CA., July 30, 2007 – Exposure to online advertising is fundamentally changing the way consumers shop, according to new research from Yahoo! and comScore, Inc. The study, which examined the impact of search and display advertising on in-store sales for five major retailers, showed that consumers exposed to online advertising tend to research or ‘pre-shop’ online prior to purchase, and this behavior ultimately leads to increased in-store sales. These highly-engaged ‘pre-shoppers’ spend an average of 41 percent more in-store when compared to consumers not exposed to online advertising. Read the entire press release here.
