With mobile advertising beginning to take off as a form of marketing for the wireless market, it was only a matter of time before tools to help advertisers analyze the results of their ad campaigns began to appear. One such tool is an offering from Bango, a UK-based company that helps businesses create a presence on the mobile web platform.

Some of the services they offer include assistance in building a mobile website, partnerships with various advertiser programs, built-in payment options for mobile sites, and the Bango Button - an easy solution to adding websites from your PC to your mobile. The company has been very successful in the UK with its Payforit product, which enables the use of standardized payment methods and screens presented to purchasers, giving a familiar feel to purchasing items via mobile phones.

Although the mobile world is expanding, a reluctance to enter the mobile marketing arena is often tied to the perception that it will be extremely difficult to adequately track visitor behavior and thus assess the effectiveness of ad campaigns. And perhaps the largest problem facing those developing analytics programs to use on the mobile platform is dealing with the plethora of wireless service providers.

Bango Analytics has broken through this barrier with technology that uses a “digital fingerprint” to provide information on an individual visitor’s country of origin, wireless network used, type of handset, unique visitors, search terms used to reach a mobile website, and conversion information, organized by specific campaigns. The complexity of the available data sets Bango apart from other attempts at providing analytics to mobile websites.

Bango makes it very easy to add the tags needed to a mobile site and its keywords, another plus. Since it is a hosted service, website owners can access their statistics directly from the Bango website anytime they wish to. The tracking also allows you to quickly identify problems with access to your site should they arise.

Although the scope of the data is perhaps less than a business owner would like, and certainly less detailed than that available with high-end web analytics programs tracking ad campaigns over the standard Web, it’s an impressive peek into how mobile users use and interact with this burgeoning new marketplace. The international flavor of the product will be of special interest to those marketing products not dependent upon physical delivery of the item purchased, such as games, video and audio-related items.

A live view of the mobile traffic on the Bango network is available on their website if you wish to get a rough idea of where the traffic is coming from and basic stats on that traffic. Bango Analytics is free for 10,000 page views per month, with a monthly charge for activity levels above that. Purchase of one of the payment options for selling content on your mobile site entitles you to free use of Bango Analytics.

Just released earlier in February 2008, it is too soon to judge the effectiveness of the product, but its feature list is impressive. If it can deliver on its promises, it will take the analysis of the effectiveness of mobile advertising to the next level. As this nascent market grows, watch for Bango to diversify their offerings to take advantage of the unique qualities and capabilities of the mobile web and help businesses selling their products via wireless do so efficiently and with the ability to track and analyze their ROI.
