In these days of extreme competitiveness in PPC advertising, a number of tools are available to help you get a handle on what your competitors are doing with their ad campaigns. One such tool is KeywordSpy, which allows you to identify the keywords your competitors online are using in their paid search campaigns.
KeywordSpy is simple to use, but very powerful in the intelligence it provides. All you need to begin is to enter the domain name of a competitor into the search box to receive a list of the keywords that entity uses in their paid search campaigns on Google, Yahoo, and/or MSN. The resulting chart is the jumping off point for detailed investigation.
The PPC Summary tab includes a pie chart showing the market share of competitors in the industry you and your competitor are working in and a market coverage bar chart graphing competition on a global level. The meat of the information is found under the Keywords tab. This chart lists not just the keywords used by the competitor you have identified, but also details on the ranked effectiveness of individual keywords, the number of competitors bidding on the same keyword, the average number of clicks per day that ads using that keyword generate, and a representation of the cost per click (in relation to average amount generated by a click.
Coverage is available for a number of different markets throughout the globe. This is a great way to find out where in the world your competitors are advertising. If they do not advertise in a market you have asked to see, KeywordSpy will inform you if you of that.
From here, you can drill down into more specific information on the competitor you are interested in, as well as others using the same keywords. If you click on any of the keywords listed, a chart showing the domains that advertise using that specific word or phrase will show, with the number of total keywords each domain uses to advertise overall. Clicking on any of those domains brings up the detailed effectiveness, cost/click, etc., information for all of the keywords in that total.
Actual ads placed by your competitor are listed under the Ad Variations tab, together with their corresponding landing pages, to make it easy to check out details on creatives and calls to action.
If the competitor domain you enter does not conduct paid advertising, KeywordSpy will inform you of this and, with a recently added feature, will display organic keywords. A new function, called Time Machine, presents historical data for the domain in question (currently starting at October 2007 and only until January 2008).
A powerful and easy-to-use keyword export feature lets you download keywords that your investigations have proven would be good additions to your ad campaigns.
KeywordSpy offers an incredible free trial offer, which will give you access to many of the available features (although limited to 20 results for each search) and will certainly give you an idea if the tool is worth investing in. Cost is $89.95 per month, which includes up to 2,000 keyword/domain queries and 50,000 keywords export per day.
