ClickDensity has been available for use since June of 2006, but has undergone a number of enhancements and improvements since its debut. ClickDensity’s basic function is to provide heatmaps and clickmaps of your website pages, activated via a few lines of JavaScript you place on the pages. When active, it will indicate the motion of visitors through your site and on individual pages within it, with sophisticated reporting that will allows you to analyze degrees of task completion using filters.
Soon after the program was launched, pricing was revamped and a Starter Package introduced, which runs about $5 US per month (ClickDensity is a UK product) for up to 10,000 clicks across a given set of pages with all the expected features of heat maps, click maps, hover maps, IP filtering, and full reporting. A/B testing capability was also added shortly after launch, as was the ability to export heat maps to disk.
Nine months after launch, the servers recorded the 100 millionth click on a user’s website, and the product has since continued to expand its reach. A white-label version has recently (September 2008) been added to the agency-affiliate solution option. If you wish to track more than one website, the Builder Package on up are available for $20 per month for up to 45,000 clicks over 10 sites all the way up to the Premium Package at $400 per month for 5 million clicks over an unlimited number of sites. Those signing up for a one-year contract will receive one month free.
Further upgrades to the features in existing packages have continued to be made as demand has increased and as cumulative data the company has collected provides them with observations on what might be useful enhancements. For example, towards the end of 2006, clicks were further delineated by two colors – green clicks indicated ones on hyperlinked items, while red marks indicated clicks on non-linked items – helping to distinguish intended clicks from accidental ones. This resulted from observations by the company that a significant portion of 5 million clicks they had tracked was not on elements with hyperlink tags.
Analysis of the path that visitors take through your site can help you discover if they are finding their goals quickly and easily or if it is not clear to them how to proceed. Looking at the placement of clicks will help you judge and test if your intentions are clear to your visitors and hover times can show you if it is clear where visitors should be clicking. Further analysis can help you refine your menus, removing or consolidating items that are infrequently or never clicked upon, and identifying text that visitors think is clickable but isn’t, to aid in reducing confusion over clickpaths.
Reports are extensive and can include filtering by date and by browser type. Click times can also be specified, so that only clicks made within a certain number of seconds after the page is loaded are shown. Specifying the tracking of only clicks made by those using the same text size setting as your current browser can also help report usability (i.e., text size will determine where visitors think the correct place to click is, so if set to something other than that of your browser, may not result in clicks in the locations you expect them to be).
A 30-day free trial affords the opportunity to test the program to see if your site is well-suited to getting the most out of this useful tool. You can cancel your account at any time if desired. The analysis of heat and click maps definitely provides useful information to refine web page design and task organization to be most attractive and productive to and for visitors seeking your products and services.
Although there are a number of products available in the market to help with web analytics, the availability of heat map data adds a layer of ease of use that makes ClickDensity worth consideration if you are working on streamlining the usability of your site(s).
