Website Grader is a free tool from HubSpot, Inc., that will analyze any URL and assign a grade to it, depending upon a number of features found on the site. In addition, you can use Website Grader to compare your site to a competitor’s, to find out which aspects you are performing well at in comparison, and which aspects need attention.

There are a number of similar free tools available, mostly with a larger focus on search engine optimization, rather than aspects related to search engine marketing/paid search. However, Website Grader includes an analysis of keywords and identifies your top competitors in addition to a plethora of other factors, useful for PPC as well.

The aspects covered in a Website Grader report are divided into five sectors: On-Page SEO, Off-Page SEO, Blogosphere, Social Mediasphere, and Competitive Intelligence. Keywords detection is contained in On-Page SEO under the Interior Page Analysis section, together with information on headings and images (number and any without ALT tags). The Competitive Intelligence section includes information on the Google Page Rank, Traffic Rank, Blog Rank, Number of Inbound Links, and Google Indexed Pages for your site and the competitors identified.

Users of Website Grader in general rank it high amongst similar tools available. Although one must not take it as the Holy Grail of optimization, the results in the reports generated are reliable general indications of your site’s strengths and weaknesses in the areas covered. Users also like the competitive analysis aspect, which allows them to quickly check out their competition to get a quick snapshot of their position and situation.

HubSpot has about 400,000 URLs currently in their database. They will send you monthly updates on your score and the details behind it if you wish, and they provide a graphic with your score percentage if you wish to display it on your website.

HubSpot also offers PressRelease.Grader.com, which analyzes your press release and assigns an effectiveness score to it, and Twitter.Grader.com, which analyzes your Twitter profile.

Although more slanted towards search engine optimization aspects of your website rather than areas directly related to pay-per-click advertising, Website Grader is a good choice for basic analysis of your site to ensure it meets the expected standards to make it more likely that people who arrive at your site via a click on your ad will find navigating your site easy. It also affords you the opportunity of ensuring that you are out-doing your competition in the basic components of successful optimization of your site, which not only will help in your rankings in the search engines, but make it more usable to those visiting your site after clicking on your ads.
