With all the analytics packages available for webmasters these days, it can be difficult to find the one that will work for your website. Woopra provides a little bit of a different approach toward web analytics, but it’s one that has potential for changing the way you look at analytics. Currently in beta, Woopra takes web metrics out of the spreadsheet and onto the website itself, with live tracking of more than 40 different statistics in real-time.

Since you can watch the traffic on your site as it arrives, travels from page to page, and even while a visitor makes a purchase, Woopra enables webmasters to clearly see problem areas, identify spots where visitors typically drop off a site, and gauge the effectiveness of content. Changes can be made quickly and the effects seen right away. The data collected is searchable.

Once a visitor leaves a comment or registers on your site, Woopra allows you to track their behavior on your site. It can even be set up to notify you when that visitor returns to the site, so you can track the details of repeat visitors. You can label each visitor with a distinct tag. The notification process can be fine-tuned to detect and let you know when visitors arrive who have searched for specific terms, arrived on specific pages, come from certain countries or IP addresses, are using a certain browser, etc. You can be notified via a visual popup or even set the system to play a sound.

Large site or small — retail site or blog — Woopra can be useful. Large sites can choose to track certain sales items or ad behavior to find out if visitors from different parts of the country approach a sale differently. Small site owners can watch the traffic on their site all day if these choose, or set up a notification when any visitor arrives if their traffic is relatively low, and follow them as they go through the site. Blog owners will find it especially useful for tracking information on those who leave comments. There is a WordPress plug-in for easy integration of Woopra into your blog, and an iPhone app so you can check your stats on the iPhone.

Woopra also has an online chat feature, which lets you offer assistance to visitors, either when they click on an online help icon or via direct contact from you to the visitor. This allows you to offer assistance if you notice a visitor having problems with negotiating an area of your site or floundering around in your shopping cart.

One of the most impressive parts of Woopra at this point is the live map view, which shows where your current visitors are coming from, along with available stats on that visitor. If this kind of information is useful to you, you can project it full-screen on an available monitor to always have a live view of traffic.

Woopra is currently in beta and so you will need to ask for an invitation. During the beta stage, daily page views are limited to 10,000 — if you go over that number, the extra views will not be tracked. In order to show up in Woopra, visitors to your site need to have Javascript enabled, which most will already. Their onsite forum offers free support during the beta stage, including an area for feature requests. An API is available. As with any beta product, caution is required and expect there to be a few blips along the way.
