Keyword Map offers a slightly different take on the typical keyword tool. The tool takes the keyword entered into its search box and finds related words and phrases from the web, displaying some of them in a visual helix on the Navigator Panel.

A more complete listing of similar keywords comes up in alphabetical order next to the helix. Each of the items in the helix and the alphabetical keyword list is clickable, and clicking on any one of those terms changes the focus to that term/keyword.

By carefully choosing the keywords in the helix to drill down further into, one can uncover a variety of synonyms for the original keyword, and then synonyms for those related words as well.

Keeping this in mind, it is best to begin explorations with Keyword Map by entering words that are general in nature that describe your product and work from there further to the long tail. For example, entering the keyword phrase “baby clothes” produces a large number of similar keywords, some of which describe subsets of the original term. Clicking on one of these variations, such as “cheap baby clothes” brings up a new helix offering new keyword-stuffed terms that focus on that aspect, such as “discount childrens clothing online.” One can continue drilling into other options presented, collecting a number of possible keyword phrase options as you go along.

The keywords discovered in this fashion can be used for paid search campaigns, of course, but may also provide ideas for tag clouds and general SEO keyword use. For paid search, Keyword Map offers a quick and easy means of collecting large numbers of synonyms and related terms for your core keywords and phrases.

The display is easy to read and use of the helix is intuitive, so anyone can quickly see how to manipulate the keywords so that the focus switches to synonyms and similar phrases. Presenting the keywords in an alphabetical list makes it easy to compare similar phrases and see possibilities for grouping keywords. One could quickly copy and paste keywords from these lists to a spreadsheet for paid campaigns.

With Keyword Map, the balance is kept between the words displayed in the helix and those in the alphabetical text list. It’s extremely useful to be able to click a term from either presentation (the visual or the textual) and have the visual representation update as well as the textual. In this fashion, one can see how the collection of keywords changes as you drill further into a phrase in a visual way as well as with text groupings.

Keyword Map is a simple, easy-to-use tool. While it claims to be “a keyword map for the whole internet,” I think it will need more work to reach that goal. Not every keyword entered into the “kw search” comes up with a large variety of related items. One usability flaw is that once down to a single item on the helix, it is not easy to return back up the tree. It would be nice if all points retained their attachment to earlier terms, so one could quickly move back and forth.

Keyword Map joins the growing group of free online keyword research tools, providing a quick and easy way to generate synonyms for paid search, this time with the added bonus of a visual presentation. By generating a lot of different ideas for keywords for a pay-per-click ad campaign, Keyword Map can help keep you exploring new avenues and possibilities not previously considered.
